Exciting news!

As my Twitter follows may have heard, I had exciting news earlier this week!

My shifter novel (with very little shifting and lots of threesome) was accepted at a press. I’m not saying much yet, because I’m not sure all the details and stuff, but I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated when I’ve more news!

Along those lines, I’ve been rather dead on a lot of social media lately because I’ve been, fancy that, writing.

I have a computer that’s not hooked up to the internet (well, it is but it would take soooo long to do anything on it, it’s  not worth it) and I’ve been hopping over to it to write for a bit every day. To entice me, I’ve set up a Chrome extension on my main computer that blocks all the sites I tell it to. Like Twitter and Tumblr and Facebook and…you get the idea. It forces me NOT to waste time on those sites.

And if I don’t write the whole time during that blocked period? Well, I find I end up doing more stuff around the house.

In the past three or four weeks I’ve written 27K words. I don’t know how much of it is good, but it felt good to write it. And I’m hoping to keep up the serious amount of writing even when this story is done.

So, a book accepted for publication and lots of writing this past month. Of course, I didn’t work on the project I had PLANNED on, but I guess that will be next month. Or something.

Oh! I also finally looked at the feedback I got on GR. I just skimmed the information, and I think some points are valid (and some not so much, but I can perhaps draw attention to the answers that are already in the story). I was glad that the reviewer suggested to emphasize the alternative world elements rather than remove them.

…Oh, I guess that should be my next project.  😀

Updates, now with pictures!

January, like every other month, flies by. I’ve been keeping busy with the writing (hit my word count goal!), making submissions, making freebies, and then looking at my spreadsheet and crying quietly 😛

My 5,000 words for January mostly went into finishing the BDSM short and writing a new ending for BAW (just finished that this morning). The short needs to sit, because I feel like it’s, well, too short. I’m sure when I return to it with fresh eyes I’ll find five a few thousand more words to add. For BAW, I need to start at the beginning and do some serious chopping out of unnecessary scenes tightening all the bits into a good story. So that will be my new week-day project.

On the weekends, when I actually can write (because I haven’t found a good way to get my brain to write during the weekdays), I’ll be rewriting a story I wrote a long time ago. I love the story and the setting and the concept, but I have a fight scene that takes four lines at one point. It’s one of those things that just needs to be trashed and re-written, although much of it will remain the same.

And I have my trust ol’ writing mug with me, of course.

You can see it, because it’s imprinted, but it says “fresh-brewed inspiration for the day ahead.” And this technically has hot chocolate in it. Don’t judge.

The book I read in January was Fifty Shames of Earl Grey by Fanny Merkin, which was amusing and had moments that were laugh-out loud, but didn’t blow me off my feet, either. It was playful and cute and I could see the moments where events in the ‘original’ were turned on their head and mocked, but it also didn’t rely upon having read the source material. Which is good, because I only got about halfway through the first before I returned it to the library.

That said, people who read the books (painfully) might enjoy this more. It was a quick read, too, which mean I was able to fit in another short book (book 1 of The Crimson Spell), which I’ve read before but am trying to read the whole series now that they are actually being translated.

While it’s sort of porny, especially in the beginning, the art is gorgeous (if you like the detailed style), and from what I remember of the story, the plot begins to pick up as the story continues. Also, the one main character turns into a hot demon covered in black markings. Mmm.

The story is focused on a young prince who takes up a cursed sword in order to save his people from invading demons, but now he’s, well, cursed. He travels afar to a wizard who promises to help him break the spell, and thus their journeys together begin! The prince only turns into a demon sometimes (mostly at night?) and the wizard finds ways to…restrain him. And…keep him distracted.

If you know what I mean.

Now to spend the rest of the weekend being productive!

Right?

Required New Year Post

I hope everyone had a lovely evening welcoming in the new year. I spent it with friends (which is the best way to spend it–and I’m counting family as friends, since your family should be your friends).

The new year means resolutions, right? I like to aim for a whole bunch of resolutions in the hopes of hitting one or two 🙂 And this year, instead of doing monthly resolutions, I’m going to aim for more general ones:

– Read ONE non-work book a month

This one should hopefully be easy, or at least not a stressor. I really just want to read more outside my genre so that I can get exposed to different writing and thoughts.

– Write 5,000 words a month

This might be tough, but it’s a low enough number that I should be able to do it. I would like to put all these words toward one project and by the end of the year have a finished 60K novel, but…

Yeah.

– Focus more on the craft of writing

I don’t just mean the craft of stringing words together. I feel like in my frenzy of writingwritingwriting, I’ve forgotten about things like plot and character development. Need to return to the livelihood of writing rather than the taskmaster I’ve made myself.

And yes, I see the irony that my previous goal is a word count. I don’t think the act of writing should stop me from improving in other ways.

– Waste less time online

I waste tons of time online and it needs to stop. Tumblr is a big one, but it’s also often my de-stressor, so I’m trying to tweak how I can keep a good balance here. This one is going to need to be a slow work in in progress, I know already 🙂

– Live my life honestly

This will be the toughest. Not that I live a lie currently, but I want to slowly start being able to be myself in all avenues of my life. Mostly in being openly genderqueer. Getting everyone to use “they” pronouns. I hate change and I hate changing how people view me, so this is a tough one. I’m going to need to be a lot braver than I generally feel I’ve been.

Along those lines I’ve also been thinking more about having certain surgeries, and while that’s going to take A LOT of contemplation, it’s something that’s on my radar.

That’s it!

Mostly. I do want to get into better shape, but I’m not making that a resolution, because…I’m pretty sure I’ll fail to reach certain goals. But I do want to start afresh. Eat less crap, exercise a little more each day, that sort of thing. If anyone wants to be competitively fit with me, let me know 🙂

May your year get progressively more awesome!

Solstice Post

Normally on the longest night of the year I make a post pointing out those people who bring light into my life. However, due to a very busy weekend, I wasn’t able to this year. But that’s not the only reason.

For the most part, the same people would be listed this year as in previous years. And this year has been especially dark for me, so those lights are dimmer and just seem to cast shadows. I know it’s not true, but when it’s this dark out, sometimes it’s hard to tell.

So this year, to not completely fall down on the job, I’m doing a more open-ended posting. Thanks to…

…my coworkers, who all give me a hand “…when they have a minute.”

…all the awesome people who I met/spoke to/ate Chinese food with at GRL this year.

…my tight group of friends.

…my family.

…all the funny, amazing, supportive people on the internet. I must be truly lucky, because I avoid the big jerks who do nothing but poke and prod.

May your days be as sunny as you’ve made mine.

OH!

And I’m thankful for my lil Hoover.

Happy Holidays! (A short story posting)

I was reading some Christmas stories, and I figured it’d been a while since I posted anything here, so here’s a short, completely unedited, Christmas story from me.
Here is the picture that inspired it:
A Family Christmas

“I want to stay,” Ren promised. And it was the truth. But he wasn’t always great at knowing what was best for himself.

“So that’s why you have your bag packed?” Steve was pissed. Hurt. As he had every right to be. Ren winced and tightened his grip on the handle of his overnight bag.

“Just going home for Christmas Eve.”

“For the night?” Steve said, but was asking, Are you coming back to me?

“Yeah.”

“I thought you said we could spend this year together.”

Ren bit his lip, the conversation with his family playing in his ears:

“But he’s so much older than you! What could you possibly have in common?”

“Don’t sell yourself to him just because he’s rich; you can do better!”

“Just wait, you’ll see how fast he drops you when the next young thing comes by.”

It was as insulting to Ren as it was to Steve. That his family would think so poorly of him. That he would sell himself. That he was settling for beneath him just because Steve was 12 years older. Obviously all he had was money. It had nothing to do with his huge heart, charming humor, and the way he looked at Ren like he could hang the fucking moon. And he was fantastic in bed.

So why was he leaving again?

“I did. My family…isn’t happy with it.”

“We’ll head over first thing. Well, second thing. You need to open your present first.” Steve’s smile visibly cost him. The ache trembled his lips. Ren was hurting him. Hurting them both.

He stepped forward, wrapping Steve in his arms and crushing him to his chest. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

He buried his face against Steve’s. Screw his family, this is where he wanted to be. Even if Steve dropped him down the line, he wanted to have this, now. “Okay, okay, I’ll stay.”

“Good.” The tension drained out of Steve’s body. Out of Ren’s. “Now let’s get to bed, we have a long and early day tomorrow.”

“It’s only eight…”

Steve leered.

“Oh.”

“Yeah.” Steve grinned, and Ren led them to their room.

***

The next morning, Ren woke to an empty bed. Which was annoying when all he wanted to do was curl up and sleep in with his boyfriend. Of course, his alarm clock going off and the smell of coffee reminded him that he had places to be. And a man who was a morning person and got the coffee ready. Thank god.

He figured they’d open presents and then shower, so he shuffled down the hall in his pajama pants with the little Santas that Steve had gotten him last year. And nearly tripped over the baby gate blocking the kitchen. “Wha?”

“You’re up.” A warm smile, joined by an even warmer kiss and a hand guiding him over the gate. “I have your coffee and present ready.”

“Why is there a baby gate? Are you pregnant?”

Steve chuckled. “It’s not a baby gate.”

He eyed the wood frame and plastic fencing. “Looks identical to the baby gates Lola had for Sammy.”

“Yeah, but these aren’t for a baby.” Steve bent down. When he stood, he had an armful of wrinkly gray-and-white puppy with giant paws and pale-green eyes. “The gates are for this little guy.”

Ren’s jaw dropped. Steve looked up from the pup, his blue eyes hopeful. “Merry Christmas.”

“Mine?” His voice cracked and he swallowed, staring at the floppy-eared little beast. It was a mutt, that was obvious, but it had visible strains of boxer terrier in it. Just like Ren had always wanted.

“Yes. Well…” Steve moved closer, since Ren seemed unable to, and Ren raised his hand to pet, only to be licked instead. “It’s your present, but its our dog.”

“Ours?”

“Yeah. To walk and potty train and dote upon.”

“And dress up in embarrassing holiday outfits?”

Steve snorted. “Holiday collars.”

Ren grinned. “Deal.” When the puppy had gotten a good enough taste, Ren was finally able to get a few good strokes in. “He’s lovely.”

“You like him?”

“Of course!”

“Want to hold him?”

Ren held out his arms in a blatant “give me” motion, and found himself taking a squirming, delightful pup in arms. The little monster wasn’t light for how small he was. But he was perfect. He kissed the dog’s ear. “What’s his name?”

Steve laughed. “He’s your present, you get to name him.”

Ren peeked up, nose still buried in the scent of clean puppy. “But he’s ours. We should both name him.”

A beatific smile broke across Steve’s face. “I’d like that. You got any ideas?”

“A few.” He set down the squirming puppy and pulled Steve into his arms instead. The dog ran a lap around their legs, then headed for the bowl of water Ren hadn’t noticed in the corner. “Sebastian.”

“Not a traditional dog name?”

Ren kissed his temple. “We could call him Bassy. But…I mean…He’s ours.”

“Yes.”

“So he should have a proper name.”

Steve kissed his jaw, his chin, his lips. “Sebastian is a lovely name.”

Ren grinned. “Good.” He broke the embrace to crouch down. “Come here, Bassy!”

The pup, drawn by the pitch in his voice and finding someone at his level, raced over.

“Good boy, Bassy!”

Steve’s fingers ran through Ren’s hair.

Rubs were had by all.

November is over!

Okay, so:

My goals for this month:
1. Edit/write every day I don’t have a conflicting event (like my GKE trip next weekend). *Holds up calendar* You can tell I’m serious ’cause I wrote it down.
2. The above should let me finish a pass of edits on SaP, SS, and HtPD. So hopefully.
3. I’d love to get 3-5 K written this month, and I’m keeping track, but it’s not make or break.

I am excited to announce that I was very successful this month.

My writing hit 3K, but it wasn’t as much original, publishable fiction as I would have liked. And I haven’t written anything since the 16th. So that one wasn’t a huge success, but it did keep me writing a little when I knew my edits would overwhelm me.

As for the edits: I finished doing a pass on SaP, SS, and HtPD. I sent SS out to two beta readers and have gotten feedback from one. Overall positive feedback, so that makes me happy. She pointed out an issue with the end that I also felt…but I need to ponder how to fix it.

SaP, sitting at just over 50K, was a close one. I just finished my editing pass today. I also have to ponder how to move forward with this one. There’s a submission call that it can be sent to, and the deadline for it isn’t until 1/31/15, so I could hunt up a beta reader and get feedback, or I can just send it off and get it off my plate.

I’m leaning toward the second, because I’d like to focus on finishing up SS and then returning to BaW, which I’d REALLY like to get done or closer to friggen done 😛

Which leads me to this month’s goals:
1. Finish writing new ending to BaW.
2. Enter handwritten edits into final file.
3. Submit BaW to the writing group.

Midpoint update!

My goals for this month:

3. I’d love to get 3-5 K written this month, and I’m keeping track, but it’s not make or break.

So far, I’ve done fairly well. I didn’t edit on vacation, but I did get a few hundred words plopped out. I’ve already hit the 3K mark (although 1300 of that was for a World of Darkness game I’m playing).

I’ve finished edits on HtPD and SS, which leaves me with 13 days to finish SaP. So we’ll see. It’s the biggest, but I’ve already started it, sooo….yeah.

This month I also started going to a local writers’ group. I wasn’t sure what kind of mix would be there, but of the four people who came to the one I went to, three were over the age of 50. Only one sneered when I mentioned queer romance. I’ll keep going and see how things turn out, but I’m definitely going to be careful what I take there. Which I knew was going to be something I’d have to worry about in my small town, but I guess I was hoping…

Anyway, back to the grindstone!

National Month of Doing Things

November is National Novel Writing Month. 50K in 30 days.

I’ve participated before. Enjoyed the challenge. Enjoyed the amount of work that got done.

But I’m also being realistic that this year it just is. Not. Happening. For reference, see October.

Here were October’s Goals:
1. Finish first pass on SaP. If ready, send to beta.
2. Finish pass on SS. If ready, send to beta.
3. Another pass on HtPD. Try for 500 more words. Submit.
4. If time/energy, look at R&R on GR.

I…did none of them. Now, I knew I had GRL, which would take up the 12-20. I just wasn’t also expecting for the ramifications of after GRL. Exhaustion being a big one. I still should have gotten some work done (and I did some edits on SaP, but not nearly enough).

I had vague plans at the beginning of October to use November as a chance to finish additions on BaW and alterations for GR. But since Nothing got done in October, I have new goals.

For November:

I’ve already started thinking about how I want to handle goals next year. I definitely want to try something different, but I’m not sure how. (Either something more consistent, something with rewards, or…I have no idea.)

I do need to do something that has more results, that’s for sure!

GRL Write-up

This past week I headed to Gay Rom Lit, a convention of queer (mainly M/M) readers, writers, and publisher. Because I was going as a publisher and we had a lot of stuff to bring, Rachel Haimowitz and I drove.

It’s a looooong drive. Full of blasting rock ballads, talking, and drinking coffee/tea (or chai, since I don’t like Starbucks’ tea).

We finally got there (it’s a 12-13 hour drive), set up our table (just the two of us), and collapsed. I’ll be honest, the day is a bit of a blur. I know we bought a deep-dish pizza (because CHICAGO), but it was not impressive. I also got in my bed. It’s actually the space where they put the coveted fridge if you are lucky enough to get one (they don’t put one in every room). I also fit quite nicely inside.
The show sorta started the next day. It was pretty much only authors and a few early birds, but we were still busy. And I was able to give Amy Lane (who I adore and fanboy over and adore. Did I mention adoring her?) the scarf I made her. And a super sekrit letter.

I look a bit like a crazed maniac in this picture, but I swear, I didn’t kill anyone. I just get reaaaally awkward when I get around people that make me excited. Awkward Alex is awkward.

Otherwise I got to meet some great authors, my coworkers, and have dinner at this place with delicious food (…something Monk). If you’re ever in Bloomingdale, IL, check it out.

The next two days were busier, as all the readers arrived and attended sessions, bought books, denied themselves buying books (and returned later to buy books), and talked. There’s just something about being surrounded by people all with a common interest.

Also Rachel posing with Grumpy Cat.

One of the days, I attended the Cock Walk, which is where artistic people make donations to be raffled off to raise money for a good cause (this year it went to Chicago’s Broadway Youth Center). Not counting the money raised from a book that was being given away, the Cock Walk raised $1,200! Here are a few fun pictures.
Of available items:

And the MC (Edmond Manning).
Yes, that’s a condom hat.
And the men who drew the tickets. They may look familiar…
And finally, the prize I won…because OF COURSE I bought tickets to donate to a good cause.
It’s a bottle opener. And lovely craftsmanship.
After a long two days, my coworkers and I were happy to relax with a cozy dinner in our room (while hanging with the delightful Becky (@fibrobabe). You get really excited about Chinese food when you’re super hungry, super tired, and want super comfort.
Sometime later in the week (it starts to get a little fuzzy after a while), we repacked everything and started the drive back.
More Starbucks.
(I sent my friend this picture. She said they look like a couple and that she can “apparently ship anything.”)
More road.
And then arriving, unpacking, returning the rental, and then I drive home. No interesting pictures from that, since I was obviously driving….But just for sticking through, here’s me happy to be almost home. These are my $5 travel glasses that I wear because I don’t care if I lose them/they get more scratched up, and they protect me when my eyes get severely sensitive to the sun. I look ridiculous, but I kind of love it…
And that was my week! I arrived home to unpacking, grocery shopping, and avoiding my work email to instead post here (I’m not sure anyone wants me to be doing work right now anyway. I’d probably have to redo it all the next morning).
To say the least, I’m horribly behind any sort of writing goal. And I’m tired to the point of not wanting to get up to check my phone six feet away. But I think the exhaustion is worth it!

Now for my favorite month!

September’s Goals

1. Work toward finishing current WIP (trans* story).
2. Do an editing pass on SaP (shifters).
3. Work on baby blanket (for my second niece). This isn’t writing related, which I’m trying to focus on more, but this is going to suck some time and it needs to be done for the solstice, latest, so I need to give it some serious attention (and it’s going to take forever).

Okay. September went really fast.

1. I finished the WIP last week. I want to do a read over (um, I guess this weekend is the plan, but I dunno) and then get it to my betas. But this was successful.

2. I didn’t really make much progress on this one. HtPD and SS took more time and I wasn’t feeling my edits.

3. I am almost finished the second color of the baby blanket. I also finished 1 half-mitt that my mom wants for xmas.

Generally pretty happy with how things went. The end of SS involved a bit more pulling of teeth than I’d anticipated, and hopefully it will stand up to re-reading, but getting that done feels like one step closer to accomplishment.

October is going to be crazy busy. I’m cat-sitting for friends at the beginning, have a work conference in the middle (I’ll be at Gay Rom Lit, if anyone wants to say hi!), while trying to enjoy one of my favorite months of the year by getting outside.

My goals reflect this. I doubt I’m going to have much/any time for creativity.

October goals
1. Finish first pass on SaP. If ready, send to beta.
2. Finish pass on SS. If ready, send to beta.
3. Another pass on HtPD. Try for 500 more words. Submit.
4. If time/energy, look at R&R on GR.

So. Many. Edits.
